Mercedes-Benz EQS prices: Updated electric limo now Australia’s longest-range EV

The upgraded Mercedes-Benz EQS electric limousine will boast the longest claimed range of any electric vehicle (EV) available in Australia, with its 810km WLTP figure beating the BMW iX3 mid-size SUV's 805km and the Tesla Model 3 Premium Long Range RWD medium sedan’s 750km.

The refreshed model, which arrives in local showrooms this month, brings a new entry-level, single-motor, rear-wheel drive EQS400 variant priced from $184,900 before on-road costs, making it the least expensive EQS sedan since the model was introduced to Australia in 2021.

It is also $35,000 cheaper than the $219,900 plus ORCs price previously charged for the dual-motor, all-wheel drive EQS450, which had been the least expensive model in the lineup.

Mercedes-Benz Australia has so far announced pricing and specifications only for the EQS400. It has not confirmed an updated replacement for the EQS450, nor whether the Mercedes-AMG EQS53 4Matic+, previously offered here from $327,075 plus ORCs, will return.

Using an updated 800-volt electrical architecture, the new EQS400 has a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 270kW of power and 505Nm of torque – more power but less torque than the previous all-wheel drive EQS450’s 265kW and 800Nm.

Its claimed 0-100km/h time of 6.2 seconds isn’t as brisk as the previous EQS450’s 5.6-second figure, but its new 112kWh battery enables a benchmark-setting 810km WLTP range, helped by a drag coefficient as low as 0.20Cd.

That compares with the outgoing EQS450’s 698km ADR range from its 118kWh battery pack. The Volvo EX60 P12 mid-size SUV, due in Australian showrooms in 2027, also has a claimed WLTP range of 810km.

The EQS400’s new electrical architecture also brings faster DC charging, with its peak rate increasing from 200kW to 350kW. Mercedes-Benz claims a 10-minute charge can add as much as 320km of range.

Outside, the updated sedan gains a more stately front-end design, with a reshaped bonnet, additional chrome accents, and a new grille featuring a Mercedes-Benz star pattern.

The EQS400 comes standard with new Digital Light headlights, which produce a 40 per cent larger high-resolution illumination field while consuming up to 50 per cent less energy than the previous system.

Their Ultra Range high-beam mode can project up to 600 metres ahead, while the cornering-light function uses information from the vehicle’s cameras and mapping data to respond more precisely to the road ahead.

Australian vehicles come with 21-inch alloy wheels and Airmatic air suspension with adaptive damping. Cloud-based Car-to-X data can warn the vehicle of speed bumps and other detected road-surface irregularities, allowing the dampers to adjust before reaching them.

At the rear, the updated sedan gains a full-width light strip with new helix elements and a more aggressive bumper inspired by the brand’s AMG performance models.

The interior is dominated by the 55-inch MBUX Hyperscreen, which incorporates three separate displays beneath a single expanse of glass.

A new Mercedes-Benz Operating System, running on an AI-enabled supercomputer, brings faster responses from the MBUX Virtual Assistant and supports over-the-air software updates.

Optional steer-by-wire technology is available for $7500, which Mercedes-Benz says makes the EQS the first production passenger vehicle from a German manufacturer to offer the technology.

It removes the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels, and is paired with a flattened, yoke-style steering wheel.

Mercedes-Benz says the system delivers greater precision and manoeuvrability while reducing the steering effort required from the driver. It works with standard rear-axle steering, which can turn the rear wheels by up to 10 degrees.

The EQS400 cabin also includes a 15-speaker, 710W Burmester 3D surround-sound system, while rear passengers benefit from heated and power-adjustable seats, and wireless phone charging. Wireless headphones are optional.

The $6900 Comfort Plus Package adds multicontour front seats, a heated steering wheel, and heat- and noise-insulating laminated glass.

An AMG Line package is also available, adding 21-inch AMG alloy wheels, illuminated door sills, AMG floor mats and Comfort seats, as well as a Nappa leather-wrapped steering wheel with galvanised shift paddles.
