Lamborghini to target new niches with future Temerario variants

From Spyder to Sterrato, Lamborghini says the Temerario’s new architecture opens the door to a broad family of variants.

Lamborghini could unleash a long list of new Temerario variants over the coming years, with everything from a Sterrato successor to wild, never-before-seen concepts potentially on the table.

The exotic Italian automaker produced 14 derivatives of the Huracán – the Temerario's predecessor – over 11 years, spanning rear- and all-wheel drive variants, convertibles, the road-legal race car-inspired STO, and even an off-road take on the supercar in the form of the Sterrato.

A similar rollout is expected for the Temerario, although product line director Paolo Racchetti says its new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) architecture allows for even more variety.

"This is a brand-new architecture that has a lot of potential for the future, and the potential could be extracted from both the ICE powertrain as well as from the electric part," Mr Racchetti told CarExpert in Milan, Italy.

"To me it's more important in the future to extract even more powerful, different interpretations of the same car.

"If you take a look at the derivatives of Huracán, more niches are definitely possible.

"Maybe we have some ideas, but we keep them for ourselves."

While Lamborghini is understandably keeping its powder dry in some respects, Mr Racchetti at least hinted at the return of familiar Huracán offshoots.

"You could have a sportier derivative to even enhance the fun-to-drive on the road, such as the Tecnica. There could be a more puristic car... a more track-oriented car. Definitely, there could be a car such as the Sterrato," he explained.

"At the moment I cannot confirm it's on our radar, but I mean Sterrato is definitely something that we all loved and is a concept that only Lamborghini can do.

"I'm not saying we are planning to do that, but I'm not excluding that it could happen again."

Revealed in 2022, the Huracán Sterrato (or ‘dirt road’ in Italian) was a limited-edition variant with 162mm of ground clearance (up 44mm on the Huracán EVO), a 30mm wider front track and 34mm wider rear track, Bridgestone all-terrain tyres, chunky wheel-arch extensions, a mechanical self-locking rear differential, and additional underbody protection.

Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann has previously told CarExpert that the development of more niche concepts such as the Sterrato will always be a matter of resource availability, with convertible and higher-performance variants taking precedence.

Indeed, a drop-top Spyder version has already been spotted testing at the Nürburgring, with a global reveal expected next year.

Mr Racchetti confirmed the Spyder is in development, and suggested it will be followed by further derivatives.

"We have a traditional lifecycle. So there is the coupe, the Spyder is coming... then there will also be other derivatives," he said.

And the Temerario's new architecture was designed with that expansion in mind.

"I can tell you that when we built this architecture, it was to cover several specific missions," concluded Mr Racchetti.
