The Ford Capri name will be revived for an electric vehicle (EV), with the Blue Oval confirming the industry’s worst-kept secret in a cheeky teaser online.
In the video posted on Ford’s social media accounts, a Mk3 Capri is parked near an EV charger when its driver gets out, walks over to the wall unit and starts to unravel the cable.
He returns to the car and attempts to plug the charging cable into the Capri’s fuel filler, but is unable to do so.
“The Legend is Back” and 10/07/24 are written on both the ground and the car’s rear window, referring to the reveal date of the reborn model.
However, before you go hoping for an electric sports car, previous teasers from Ford have shown the beloved nameplate will be affixed to an SUV.
Though it’ll feature a coupe-inspired body plus its own distinctive front- and rear-end styling, the new Capri will be closely related to the European Ford Explorer, which rides on Volkswagen’s MEB dedicated EV architecture.

The reborn Ford Capri will be built in Cologne, Germany at the same factory which built the first three generations of the original coupe.
While some see the return of the Capri name on an EV as an insult to its legacy, the nameplate has been revived once already following the end of the European coupe’s production in 1986.
Ford Australia used the nameplate on a front-wheel drive, Laser-based convertible in 1989, which had the misfortune of launching at the same time as the iconic rear-wheel drive Mazda MX-5.
Prior to this, the Capri nameplate had also been used by Mercury (on a version of the Ford Mustang) and Lincoln (on a full-sized luxury car).
