2024 will be a milestone year for Volkswagen in Australia as it finally launches its first electric vehicles (EVs).
Four new EVs are due during the year, while Volkswagen has also confirmed the ID.2 electric hatchback for our market – though it has stopped short of announcing specific launch timing.
The company has detailed a product onslaught for 2024 and beyond, announcing new models like the ID.2 and mid-sized Tayron SUV while also providing updated launch timing for previously confirmed vehicles.
Below, we’ve detailed all the upcoming vehicles Volkswagen has confirmed for our market.
Touareg facelift (including R): March/April 2024
The Touareg R will be the brand’s first plug-in hybrid in Australia, and will headline an updated Touareg range that’ll touch down in March or April 2024.
The range-topper will be priced at $129,990 before on-road costs.
While it hasn’t released pricing for the rest of the range, Volkswagen Australia is promising more features and more value but with the same luxury as standard.
The recently revealed mid-life update has brought a raft of aesthetic updates both inside and out, plus the brand’s latest generation of matrix LED headlights.

ID.4 and ID.5: June/July 2024
Pre-sales for the brand’s mid-sized EVs will begin in the first quarter of 2024, ahead of a launch in June or July.
The brand has yet to announce pricing, but has confirmed the ID.4 and its ID.5 coupe SUV sibling will come here “highly specified”.
Each will be available in two variants: a single-motor rear-wheel drive Pro model and a dual-motor all-wheel drive GTX.

T-Cross facelift: September/October 2024
The brand’s smallest, most affordable SUV is getting a mid-life update, with a new dash panel featuring soft-touch materials and minor exterior tweaks.
There’s also an updated safety suite, while Volkswagen will make the R-Line a dedicated model instead of an option package.

Multivan: Fourth quarter of 2024
Volkswagen will launch its next-generation T7 Multivan in Australia late in 2024 – three years after it was first revealed in Europe – with two lengths, two trim levels and one turbo-diesel engine.
It moves to the brand’s MQB architecture for passenger vehicles, and Volkswagen says it’ll add another powertrain in 2025. While it hasn’t said what that will be, the people mover is offered with petrol and plug-in hybrid options in Europe.

ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo: Fourth quarter of 2024
Volkswagen will launch its reborn Kombi – the all-electric ID.Buzz – in Australia as a short-wheelbase five-seat and long-wheelbase seven-seat people mover, plus a short-wheelbase cargo van.
The company has confirmed both ID. Buzz models will arrive here in the fourth quarter of 2024 in Pro trim, alongside the load-lugging ID. Buzz Cargo.
The SWB-only Buzz Cargo will come standard with a load partition, with a choice of either two seats up front or a three-seat bench.

Transporter and Caravelle: First quarter of 2025
Volkswagen has yet to reveal its next-generation Transporter, which is set to be based on the next-generation Ford Transit Custom and use its batteries, electric motors, engines and transmissions.
That will reportedly mean both the Ford and Volkswagen vans will roll out of the Ford Otosan factory in Turkey with a range of combustion, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains.
Volkswagen has confirmed there will be a next-generation Caravelle, pointing to a people mover based on the Transit Custom that will join the company’s MEB-based electric ID. Buzz and MQB-based petrol and plug-in hybrid Multivan people carriers.

California: TBD
The next-generation California is based on the Multivan, and will offer a choice of a five-seat layout or a four-seat layout complete with a kitchen – the latter a first for our market.
It isn’t expected to arrive any earlier than 2025, as it was only recently revealed in (essentially production-ready) concept guise.

Golf facelift (including GTI/R): “Beyond 2024”
The Volkswagen Golf is getting a mid-life update that has been snapped in spy photos, bringing minor cosmetic changes and likely a larger touchscreen inside the cabin.
Volkswagen had previously indicated it planned to finally bring a plug-in hybrid Golf here, but as it stands the Touareg R is the only PHEV locked in for our market.

Tiguan: Early 2025
Volkswagen hasn’t provided exact launch timing for the next-generation Tiguan, but the new mid-sized SUV is expected here early in 2025.
It’ll be offered with petrol power, but the company has walked back previous comments about bringing a plug-in hybrid option here and has yet to confirm a diesel option for our market.

Tayron: “Beyond 2024”
Volkswagen will replace the current Tiguan Allspace with a next-generation version of its Tayron, currently a mid-sized SUV exclusive to the Chinese market.
It’ll reportedly use a long-wheelbase version of the new Tiguan’s platform and be larger overall than the Tiguan Allspace, and is expected to still offer the option of a third row of seating.

ID.3: “Beyond 2024”
Volkswagen had previously confirmed the ID.3, its Golf-sized electric hatchback, would arrive here late in 2024.
It launched in Europe in 2020, and was recently revealed in mid-life update guise with minor aesthetic changes outside and what the company claims is a more premium interior.
The brand has previously confirmed it plans to bring the as-yet unrevealed ID.3 GTX, a hot flagship of the range, to Australia.

ID.2: “Beyond 2024”
Previewed by the ID. 2all and ID.GTI concepts, the ID.2 will be a new Polo-sized electric hatchback that promises the interior space of a Golf.
It’ll go on sale in Europe in 2025 with an intended starting price of under €25,000 (A$40,000).
Just what it will be priced at here is unclear, though if it can hit that $40,000 mark it would find itself up against a range of cut-price Chinese electric hatchbacks including the MG 4.
