2027 Mercedes-AMG GT53 revealed as longest-range version of controversially styled EV sedan

The name of the Mercedes-AMG GT53 4-Door Coupe may only be a few digits away from the previously revealed GT55 and GT63, but it has significantly less power… and significantly more range.

And like its shorter-range, more powerful siblings, it's yet to be confirmed for Australian release.

“The GT53 is under consideration for Australia and, similar to the other variants, yet to be confirmed,” said a Mercedes-Benz Australia spokesperson.

Revealed this evening, the new entry-level variant in the second-generation GT 4-Door Coupe lineup features dual electric motors – instead of three – with total peak outputs of 400kW of power and 800Nm of torque.

That compares to outputs of 600kW/1800Nm for the GT55. and 860kW/2000Nm for the GT63.

Mercedes-AMG quotes a total continuous output of 270kW, while the GT55 produces 375kW and the GT63 pumps out 530kW. Claimed 0-100km/h times are naturally slower for the GT53 as a consequence, with the new base model taking 3.9 seconds without any rollout. According to Mercedes-AMG, the GT55 takes 2.8 seconds and the GT63 takes 2.4 seconds.

However, the GT53 offers between 682km and 809km of WLTP range, depending on specification, while the GT55 has between 597km and 700km, and the GT63 has between 596km and 696km.

Like the rest of the GT 4-Door Coupe lineup, the GT53 has a two-speed transmission, a 106kWh battery, and an 800V electrical architecture with a maximum DC charge rate of 600kW.

Mercedes-AMG says over 534km of range can be added in 10 minutes, and the vehicle can switch from 800V to 400V charging.

Energy consumption is a claimed 15.6-18.5kWh/100km, and the electric motor on the front axle is designed as a ‘boost’ motor and under low load will disengage to aid efficiency.

Mercedes-AMG says its acoustic specialists “meticulously investigated the true sound of an AMG inline six-cylinder engine” to develop the GT53’s sound, and “captured its character” at 16 different microphone positions inside and outside the vehicle.

It used the previous Mercedes-AMG E53 Coupe as the “acoustic reference” for the new EV.

“The result is genuine goosebump moments – unmistakable, intense, and typically AMG,” the company says, with the artificial engine note able to be heard from both inside and outside the vehicle.

To further make the GT53 feel like a combustion-powered vehicle, Mercedes-AMG allows you to use the paddle shifters to adjust between artificial gears. These simulated gear changes will also occur automatically in AMGFORCE Sport+ mode.

Other drive modes comprise Comfort, Sport, Slippery, Eco and Individual.

The GT53 features AMG Ride Control suspension with air springs and adaptive damping, with the dampers able to be toggled between Comfort, Sport and Sport+ settings.

The AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system also supports rear-wheel torque-vectoring.

The new GT 4-Door Coupe measures 5094mm long, 1959mm wide and 1411mm tall, making it 46mm longer, 6mm wider and 42mm lower than its predecessor.

There are also shorter overhangs, while the EV’s 3040mm wheelbase extends beyond the previous model's 2951mm.

Inside, there’s a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, as well as a 14-inch central touchscreen angled towards the driver.

Occupants sit under a Sky Control panoramic glass roof, with segments that can be switched from transparent to opaque. There are individual bucket seats in the rear.

In Germany, the GT53 will be priced from €115,430 (~A$189,200), making it significantly cheaper than the GT55 which opens at €154,700 (A$253,500).
