2027 GWM Tank 300 revealed with bigger body, new PHEV option

The GWM Tank 300 off-roader has been stretched, with a longer wheelbase but a shorter front overhang.

The “all-new” GWM Tank 300 sure looks the same at first glance, but a closer look reveals the next generation of the large ladder-frame off-road SUV has grown significantly.

For now, GWM has only released a handful of exterior images on Chinese social media. However, a recently published Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filing shared by Chinese outlet Kuai Technology reveals some key details.

"This remains a domestic market release only at this stage. As with all new products released, our local team will review and assess the options and fit for our local consumers," said a GWM Australia spokesperson in a statement.

The new Tank 300 looks much the same – right down to the lighting elements – but differs with a significantly longer bonnet thanks to a stretched wheelbase.

The new model reportedly now measures 4886mm long, 1984mm wide and 1927mm tall on a 3010mm wheelbase. The outgoing model, in contrast, measures 4760mm long, 1930mm wide, 1903mm tall and rides on a 2750mm wheelbase.

It’s unclear how much more cabin space will be liberated, if any, given the wheelbase stretch appears to have been accomplished by pushing the front axle forward.

However, the revised dimensions appear to have resulted in a shorter front overhang, which may increase the Tank 300’s approach angle and make it even more off-road-capable.

The Tank 300 will, however, gain a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain that’ll be less suited to serious off-roading.

It’s the latest Tank model to gain the Hi4-Z powertrain, which combines a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 59.6kWh battery and an electronically controlled four-wheel drive system.

Off-road and PHEV enthusiasts need not fret, however, as the outgoing model’s Hi4-T system will continue. This continues to incorporate a 37.1kWh battery offering 105km of electric range instead of 200km for the Hi4-Z.

GWM Australia has said it sees "potential" for an Hi4-Z-equipped model in our market, but hasn't confirmed when we can expect to see one and which Hi4-Z model it'll import. Hi4-Z versions of the Tank 400, Tank 500 and Tank 700 are currently offered in China.

In the updated Tank 300 lineup, the PHEVs sit alongside turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 3.0-litre V6 petrol engines. Kuai Technology made no mention of the current model’s 2.0-litre turbo hybrid or 2.4-litre turbo-diesel powertrains.

Given GWM is continuing to invest in diesel powertrains, with a new 3.0-litre four-cylinder mill in the works, it appears unlikely that the Tank 300 will do without a diesel option.

Images released by GWM also show the Tank 300 will receive a roof-mounted LiDAR unit, while the Tank logo has been replaced up front by Tank lettering.

The current Tank 300 recently gained the Hi4-T PHEV powertrain in Australia, though petrol and hybrid options are being phased out. This will leave just diesel and PHEV options in Australia.

GWM Australia has also skipped an update to the existing model, revealed in China in March 2025, that brings a redesigned dashboard with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a free-standing 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen running the automaker's latest Coffee OS 3.0 operating system.

It confirmed Australian-market Tank 300s wouldn’t adopt this interior as it has a column-mounted gear shifter instead of one mounted on the console, which it says its research showed would be negatively received by its customers.
