The Geely EX2 electric hatchback was the best-selling passenger car in China in 2025, and its arrival Down Under sees it join the mid-size Geely Starray EM-i plug-in hybrid and EX5 electric SUVs.

While it's the first hatch offered by Geely Australia, it uses the same platform as its showroom siblings, in a five-door, five-seat layout with a single electric motor and rear-wheel drive. It'll take on rivals such as the BYD Dolphin, MG 4 EV Urban and GAC Aion UT.

If you're unfamiliar with Geely, you may know some of the automotive brands it owns, including Volvo, Lotus, Polestar and Zeekr, all of which have a presence in Australia. It also owns a 50:50 stake in Smart, with Mercedes-Benz owning the other half.

Geely launched vehicles under its own factory-backed operation in Australia in 2025, having previously been offered here between 2011 and 2014 through a private importer.

Under its factory-backed operation, Geely now has around 43 dealers across Australia.

The model lineup sees two EX2 grades offered from launch, with the entry-level EX2 Complete offering up to 252km of range on a single charge, while the up-spec EX2 Inspire brings more power, faster charging and a longer claimed range of 345km.

The EX2 may be popular in China, but hatchbacks no longer sell in the huge numbers they once did in Australia. Helping its case is its arrival after EVs achieved record market share locally, with almost one in four new vehicles sold in June being electric.

Yet its case in the hatchback segment is strengthened by pricing that rivals many hybrid and petrol alternatives despite the EX2 being an EV, while also offering competitive driving range, interior space and features such as multi-link rear suspension, designed to improve handling and rear-seat comfort.

    Drivetrains and Efficiency

The EX2 is offered with a single-motor powertrain and rear-wheel drive, differing from many of its rivals which have a front-wheel drive configuration, while each of the two model grades features different power outputs and battery sizes.

It uses the same Global Intelligent Electric Architecture (GIEA) as the EX5 and Starray EM-i already sold here, with a 400V electrical architecture, up to 80kW DC fast charging and vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability.

It also comes standard with MacPherson-type strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension, electric power steering and four drive modes (Eco, Comfort, Sport and Snow).
