Best electric cars for families in 2026

The Zeekr 7X has been named Australia’s best mid-size electric SUV in the 2026 CarExpert Choice Awards.
It beat out the Tesla Model Y, last year's winner, and the Skoda Elroq for the title.
After a bit of a slow start for the Zeekr brand, it's kicked into overdrive with the arrival of the 7X which has stormed up the sales charts. And with good reason, too – this is a thoroughly good mid-size electric SUV.
Looking for your next car? We'll help you research and compare so you choose with confidence.

Its interior is spacious and comfortable, with high-quality materials, plenty of tech, and clever storage solutions.
You don't even need to step up to the flagship Performance variant with its air suspension and 3.8-second claimed 0-100km/h time to get a 7X that's both comfortable and rewarding to drive.
All 7Xs can be charged at up to 22kW on AC power, and offer maximum DC fast-charge rates north of 400kW. Infrastructure permitting, that means less time spent at a charger than with many of the 7X's rivals.

Range figures are thoroughly competitive too, with between 480km and 615km available on the WLTP cycle depending on the variant.
The 7X is great as an EV and great as a family car, and despite Zeekr's premium positioning it has a base price lower than some of its key rivals.
Rival brands will need to sit up and take notice of this compelling new entry into the mid-size electric SUV segment.
