Interested in a MG3?

MG has increased pricing on its MG 3 twice this year with the base-model Core now starting from $19,990 drive-away.

The brand has increased prices for the MG 3 Core and Core with Nav by $500, while the MG 3 Excite remains at $20,990 drive-away.

Since last year the brand also removed three colour options including Tudor Yellow, Regal Blue and Tartan Red. MG introduced Surfing Blue this year.

The brand is reportedly working on a replacement for the top-selling light car, which is over a decade old.

“MG 3 will continue for another 12-18 months, before it’s replaced. But we won’t call it MG 3,” MG’s commercial director in the UK, Guy Pigounakis told Auto Express – though these remarks were almost 12 months ago, and we’ve still yet to see the mooted successor.

It’s not clear what the brand will name its MG 3 successor or if it will feature any form of electrification.

MG Australia will continue to have a small hatch within its line-up to offer a “value” option with a seven-year warranty to its customers.

“We all know we’re living in increasingly difficult times in terms of affordability, so from our perspective whilst I talked about value, we’re not walking away from value and still need to use products like that to give people the opportunity to have a brand new car with a seven-year warranty and plenty of features,” said MG Motor Australia’s marketing boss, Rick Whaite, back in March.

Locally the MG 3 is the most affordable light hatch and is one of just two cars on sale today available with a drive-away price tag under $20,000. The other is the smaller Kia Picanto.

As of June, MG has sold 8449 examples of the MG 3, which holds a 37 per cent share of its segment.

It comfortably outsold rivals such as the Suzuki Swift (3308), Kia Rio (2950) and Mazda 2 (2750). The number of offerings in the light car segment has shrunk as brands have either shifted to only offering a hot hatch variant (Hyundai) or left it entirely (Ford, Honda).

MG still markets the MG 3 as the MG 3 Auto even though a manual was last seen in 2017 in the pre-facelift model.

The second row of seats fold down in a 60:40 split.

    Servicing and Warranty

    The 2023 MG 3 is backed by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

Servicing is required every 12 months or 10,000km, whichever comes first.

MG offers seven-years capped price servicing under its Precise Price Servicing scheme. The MG 3’s first seven services are capped at $251, $300, $290, $347, $251, $339, and $251.

    Safety

The MG 3 has never been crash-tested by ANCAP, though it received a disappointing three stars when assessed by Euro NCAP in 2014. It also lacks any active safety features such as autonomous emergency braking.
