Toyota Gazoo Racing has made its hottest hatchback hotter again.

The 2022 Toyota GRMN Yaris has been revealed at the Tokyo Auto Salon in three different flavours, all of which will be sold in limited numbers in Japan.

“Toyota Australia is aware of local consumers’ strong appetite for high performance vehicles and particularly hatches and will continue to bring as many exciting new products to our market as possible,” Toyota Australia said in a statement.

“In this instance, the GRMN Yaris is currently only available as a Japanese Domestic Market offering for a limited volume of 500 vehicles.”

The GRMN is 10mm wider, 10mm lower, and 20kg lighter than the standard GR Yaris. The first four gear ratios have been shortened, the final drive is shorter, and there are mechanical limited-slip differentials under the skin in place of the Torsen units from the stock car.

Peak power is unchanged at 200kW, but peak torque has been bumped from 370Nm to 390Nm in the GRMN.

Along with the carbon roof of the standard car, the GRMN packs a carbon fibre lip spoiler and bonnet to lower the centre of gravity.

The rear seats are gone (a favourite move when making hot hatches more hardcore), and there’s a chunky strut brace in their place to stiffen up the body.

The boot lid, roof, and bonnet are made of carbon fibre, and the bonnet features a rally-style scoop to feed more air into the turbocharged three-cylinder engine. Subaru isn’t the only brand capable of making a bonnet scoop look good, right?

GRMN buyers will have the option to customise their car with two packages: the Circuit Package and the Rally Package.

The former is a factory option, and adds a set of unique 18-inch alloy wheels, adjustable Bilstein shocks, a carbon swan-neck spoiler, side skirts, and a lip spoiler.

The latter is a dealer option, and brings with it a set of GR shock absorbers and stabilisers, extra underbody protection, and a GR roll cage behind the wheel. The Circuit Package is pictured in black, the Rally Package is red.

Toyota is selling the GRMN using a lottery, which opens today on the Toyota GR website in Japan. A range of GR Performance parts will be offered for sale later on, designed to let regular GR Yaris owners to add some GRMN flavour.
