The oft-overlooked SsangYong Rexton gets that special edition cliché for 2022: a Black Edition.

Available in either Space Black or Pearl White, the limited edition is based on the range-topping Ultimate and features more cosmetic tweaks than some blacked-out special editions.

In addition to the expected black-finish alloy wheels – measuring 20 inches – there are also black painted roof rails, a gloss-black grille, and unique LED fog lights.

UPDATE, 20/04/2022 3:27pm – SsangYong has provided a single image of the local-spec Black Edition. We’ve updated the article accordingly.

Unusually for a car in 2022, the Rexton hasn’t received a price increase. The range still opens at $47,990 drive-away as it did last year, after the old petrol-powered, rear-wheel drive EX base trim was axed.

The Black Edition slots in atop the range at $56,585 drive-away.

The Ultimate has lost its unique 20-inch alloy wheels, and instead reverts to the ELX’s 18s.

Metallic paint is up by $100 to $595 on the ELX and Ultimate, though it’s standard on the Black Edition. Otherwise, the Rexton range is unchanged.

We’ve called the Rexton one of Australia’s best cars nobody’s buying, and it continues to be overlooked by most large SUV buyers.

It boasts a braked towing capacity of 3500kg like an Isuzu MU-X, but is rather unusual in this segment in coming with independent multi-link rear suspension.

It also features an auto-locking rear differential.

    • 2022 SsangYong Rexton ELX: $47,990
    • 2022 SsangYong Rexton Ultimate: $54,990
    • 2022 SsangYong Rexton Black Edition: $56,585

    Prices are drive-away.

The 2022 SsangYong Rexton is powered by a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine producing 149kW of power at 3800rpm and 441Nm of torque between 1600 and 2600rpm.

It’s mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and power is sent through a part-time four-wheel drive system with selectable low range.

    Fuel Economy

The 2022 SsangYong Rexton uses 8.7L/100km on the combined cycle. It has a 70L fuel tank.

The 2022 SsangYong Rexton measures 4850mm long, 1825mm tall and 1960mm wide on a 2865mm wheelbase.

With all three rows up, it has 236L of boot space measured to the top of the third row seatback. This expands to 641L with the third row dropped, up to a maximum of 1806L – measured to the roof – with the second and third rows folded.

Braked towing capacity is 3500kg while unbraked towing capacity is 750kg. Maximum towball load is 350kg.

It has 203mm of ground clearance and approach and departure angles of 20.5 degrees and a breakover angle of 20 degrees.

Kerb weight is 2130kg, while gross vehicle mass is 2960kg and gross combined mass is 6460kg.
