Genesis Australia is gearing up to launch three new electric cars in the first half of 2022.
The trio will put Genesis in a strong position to take on its more established luxury rivals in the burgeoning electric car space.
The GV60 hasn’t yet been priced for Australia, but is similarly sized to the Mercedes-Benz EQA and Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, along with the Audi Q4 e-tron that hasn’t yet been locked in for Australia.
Three GV60 models will be offered globally, all of which feature a 77.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
The base rear-wheel drive model has 168kW of power and 350Nm of torque, while the all-wheel drive model combines a 160kW rear motor with a 74kW front motor for a combined 234kW and 605Nm.
Finally, the range-topping performance model has two 160kW motors for a peak power output of 320kW, and an identical peak torque figure of 605Nm.
Under the skin, the GV70 EV is expected to ride on a variation of the petrol and diesel GV70’s platform, rather than the bespoke e-GMP chassis underpinning the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and aforementioned GV60.
Using the electric G80 sedan as a guide, the GV70 could feature a dual-motor powertrain with a combined 272kW of power and 700Nm of torque.
The Electrified G80 will occupy a unique slot in Australia’s new car market, and is likely to be the lowest-volume member of the electric Genesis trio.
It’ll come standard with all-wheel drive, using a dual-motor electric drivetrain with 136kW/350Nm motors on each axle for combined outputs of 272kW and 700Nm.
Genesis says the Electrified G80 can sprint from 0-100 in 4.9 seconds, while it’s also capable of charging using 350kW fast charging to replenish the battery from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in 22 minutes.
The G80 EV also features solar panels in the roof that can help generate power when parked or on the move.
Additionally, the Electrified G80 offers a Vehicle to Load (V2L) system which allows customers to draw 3.6kW from the vehicle’s battery to use electric appliances.
Beyond its electric future, Genesis has set itself some bold sales goals for Australia. The company is also expecting to triple its 2020 sales figures in 2021, albeit from a low base.
The GV70 mid-sized SUV, the brand’s first, is expected to make up 40 per cent of sales.
Given the brand expects to clock 700 sales by the end of the year, it wants the GV70 to log at least 280 sales annually moving forward.
The larger GV80 SUV is expected to be the brand’s second-best seller.
