    The 2020 Mazda 3 is available in 12 variants, with pricing ranging from $25,590 before on-road costs for the G20 Pure manual to $41,590 before on-road costs for the automatic X20 Astina.

    The fourth-generation Mazda 3 has gone from being a top-selling contender to fourth place in the small car class.

    With 12.8 per cent of its segment, it sits behind the Toyota Corolla (22.7 per cent), Hyundai i30 (19.5 per cent), and Kia Cerato (15.7 per cent), and just ahead of the Volkswagen Golf (11.1 per cent).

    All variants are available in both sedan and hatchback, with no price difference between the body styles.

    Engines

    The Mazda 3 G20 Pure, Evolve, and Touring are fitted with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 114kW and 200Nm.

    A 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 139kW and 252Nm is fitted to the Mazda 3 G25 Evolve, GT and Astina.

    New for 2020 is the Skyactiv-X M Hybrid engine, a 2.0-litre supercharged petrol backed by a 24V mild hybrid system.

    In Europe, the engine has claimed outputs of 132kW and 224Nm, down 7kW and 28Nm on the current range-topping 2.5-litre engine.

    Both engines can be fitted with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

    Fuel Economy

    The 2020 Mazda 3 G20 manual sedan uses 6.3L/100km on the combined cycle, while the automatic is rated at 6.1L/100km.

    The G25 manual sedan drinks 6.2L/100km, and the automatic is rated at 6.5L/100km.

    The hatch drinks an extra 0.1L/100km for all variants.

    Claimed fuel economy for the X20 is 5.3L/100km on the tougher WLTP test cycle with the manual, and 6.4L/100km with an automatic.

    Dimensions

    The 2020 Mazda 3 sedan measures 4660mm long, 1440mm tall and 1795mm wide, with a 2725mm wheelbase. 

    The hatch is 4460mm long and 1435mm tall, but shares all other dimensions with the sedan.

    The Mazda 3 tips the scales at between 1316kg for the G20 Pure manual and 1388kg for the G25 Astina automatic.

    The Mazda 3 has a claimed boot capacity of 444L for the sedan, and 295L for the hatch.

    Safety

    The Mazda 3 has an ANCAP safety rating of five stars, with scores of 98 per cent in adult occupant protection, 89 per cent in child occupant protection, 81 per cent in vulnerable road user protection, and 76 per cent in safety assist.

    All 2020 Mazda 3 models come standard with autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, a reversing camera, and traffic sign recognition.

    The top-spec G25 GT also comes with adaptive LED headlights, driver attention monitoring, front cross-traffic alert, and front parking sensors.

    The 2020 Mazda 3’s services are priced between $309 and $359, and maintenance is required every 12 months or 10,000km – whichever comes first.
