With the imminent arrival of the 220i later in the third quarter of this year, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe range will grow to three variants.

Prices start at $49,990 before on-road costs for the 218i, rising to $71,729 before on-road costs for the M235i xDrive.

The front/all-wheel drive 2 Series Gran Coupe is unrelated to the 2 Series coupe and convertible, which use an older, rear-wheel drive platform.

Engines

The 2020 BMW 218i Gran Coupe uses a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine producing 103kW of power and 220Nm of torque. It’s mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and is front-wheel drive. BMW quotes a 0-100km/h time of 8.7 seconds.

The 2020 BMW 220i Gran Coupe uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 141kW of power and 280Nm of torque. It also uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and is front-wheel drive. It does the 0-100km/h dash in 7.2 seconds.

The range-topping 2020 BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe is the only all-wheel drive model in the local range. It uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 225kW of power and 450Nm of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel Economy

The 2020 BMW 218i Gran Coupe consumes 5.9L/100km on the ADR combined cycle and runs on 95RON premium unleaded fuel while the M235i xDrive Gran Coupe consumes 7.6L/100km and requires 98RON premium unleaded fuel.

BMW hasn’t yet released fuel economy figures for the 220i.

Dimensions

The 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe measures 4526mm long, 1420mm tall, and 1800mm wide (2081mm including the exterior mirrors).

Safety

The 2 Series Gran Coupe has yet to be tested by ANCAP or its European counterpart, EuroNCAP, though the mechanically related 1 Series hatchback received a rating of five stars when it was tested last year.

All 2020 2 Series Gran Coupe models come standard with autonomous emergency braking (urban speeds only), lane-departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and front, front-side and curtain airbags.

Inter-urban autonomous emergency braking is added when you add the optional adaptive cruise control with Stop and Go.

Servicing

BMW offers two different capped-price servicing plans on the 2 Series Gran Coupe. A five-year, 80,000km basic plan is $1550, while the Plus Plan costs $4154 and adds brake pad and disc replacement and wiper blade rubbers.

The company offers only a three-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, even as some rivals now offer five-year warranties.
