The Volkswagen ID. GTI concept has been revealed at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich, previewing the electric future for the brand’s iconic hot hatch badge.

Volkswagen has committed to launching 11 new electric models by 2027; arguably the most exciting of them is going to be a sub-€25,000 (A$41,759) production version of the ID.2all concept, along with this fully-electric ID. GTI, which will be the first of a number of go-fast electric vehicles wearing the GTI badge.

While details are scarce at this stage, we do know the production version of the ID. GTI – due in 2027 – will be fully electric and front-wheel drive only. In fact, the MEB Entry platform this rides on doesn’t offer rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Externally, the ID. GTI builds on the ID.2all concept with an aggressive lower lip, red recovery hooks and a prominent rear diffuser. Designers even managed to discreetly place door handles for the second row, which helps reduce production costs by negating the need for a an additional window pane in the door.

Inside, Volkswagen has created GTI Experience Control. This includes the ability to customise the drive experience with simulated gear shifts (similar to the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N), as well as adjusting the steering and sound system.

A physical gear stick has been replaced with an e-shifter, while a 10.9-inch driver display changes the game in terms of offering drivers ultimate visibility over various functions beyond your typical speed and power meter readouts.

Dimensions come in at 4104mm long with a 2600mm wheelbase, with tyres measuring 245mm wide on 20-inch wheels at the front.

Volkswagen plans to launch a production version of the ID.2all concept priced from below €25,000 (A$41,759) in 2026, with the market version of the ID. GTI concept planned for a 2027 release.

“Given Australia is a performance focused market and GTI makes up a significant portion of Polo and Golf sales, we will have our hand up for any future production version of the ID. GTI,” said a spokesperson for Volkswagen Australia.
