The website where Victorians can apply for a special one-off vehicle registration rebate has been inundated with motorists on its opening day, leaving discount seekers waiting after it went down following its launch at 9:00am this morning.

According to ABC Melbourne, an error message on the Services Victoria website earlier today said there had been technical issues and asked users to “please try again later”.

The problem prompted the office of Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan to say the site had been “overwhelmed”, and to urge motorists to be “patient” as efforts were made to bring it back online.

In April, the Victorian Government announced vehicle owners would be eligible for a 20 per cent discount on registration for up to two privately registered vehicles weighing less than 4.5 tonnes, in a move that could hand back almost $750 million to vehicle owners.

Typically, the saving amounts to around $186 per vehicle, meaning as much as $372 for someone claiming the discount for two vehicles. The rebate will be paid regardless of whether the vehicle owner pays their registration monthly, quarterly or annually.

After opening today, applications for the rebate will remain open until July 31, 2026, when the scheme ends.

The Victorian Government said four million vehicles on the state's roads are eligible for the rebate, which would total $744 million in waived registration fees.

The move comes a day after two months of free public transport ended in Victoria, although half-price fares will remain in place until the end of this year as part of measures designed to ease the impact of record fuel prices due to conflict in the Middle East since late February.

In Australia, record retail prices for diesel and petrol were reached in April, affecting almost every industry and prompting incentives from auto brands including Ford, which has introduced a $4000 fuel card offer for its predominantly diesel-powered Ford Ranger ute and Everest SUV lineups.

The fuel price crisis also prompted the federal government to halve its fuel excise to 26.3c/L and remove the 32.4c/L heavy vehicle road user charge for three months from April 1, 2026.

Following the federal budget it handed down on May 12, 2026, the Australian Government has shown no sign of extending these measures beyond their original June 30 expiry despite cost of living pressures and ongoing uncertainty over fuel prices.
