Road safety cameras in the Australian Capital Territory aren’t just looking for people speeding, using their phones or running red lights anymore.
From August 27, all road safety cameras in the nation’s capital are also now checking the vehicle registration status of drivers committing the above-mentioned offences.
If your registration is expired and one of these cameras spots you committing one of these offences, you’ll be slugged with an additional $700 fine.

The ACT Government says most vehicles’ registration can be renewed online, even if it has been unregistered for up to 12 months.
Beyond 12 months without registration, however, and you’ll need to have a roadworthy inspection performed.
The Government says vehicle registration is not only a legal requirement, it’s crucial for maintaining road safety and without valid rego and insurance a driver may be personally liable for any injuries caused to themselves and others.

There are also 10 marked mobile speed camera vans that can be placed at more than 900 locations within the territory.
