Nissan Leaf Nismo revealed with an interesting omission

The sportier Nismo version of the third-generation Nissan Leaf is now available in Japan, but there's a slight catch.

Unlike some other Nismo-fettled models, such as the GT-R and Patrol, the Leaf Nismo carries no extra spuds under the bonnet. Instead, the company has zeroed in on handling and styling.

The Nismo is available in B5 trim with a 130kW/345Nm motor driving the front wheels, and in B7 spec with a 160kW/355Nm doing duty up front. 

All versions feature new springs, stabilisers and bushes, as well as shock absorbers with swing valves to reduce initial body roll. The Nismo rides on lightweight 19-inch Enkei alloy wheels shod with 235/45 Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tyres.

Flappy paddles behind the steering wheel allow the driver choose from four levels of regenerative braking. There are also four drive modes available (Standard, Sport, Eco and Personal), the first three of which have been retuned for the Nismo. 

Combined, Nissan claims the Leaf Nismo feels "lighter and more agile than its size and weight would suggest", which for the record is 1820kg for the base B5, 1920kg for the standard B7, and 1900kg for the B7 with Recaro seats.

It's easy to spot the Nismo from lesser versions of the the electric SUV, thanks to liberal use of the Arterial Magma (that's red to you and me) highlights along the lower portion of the body, and on the wing mirror caps. 

Other distinguishing features include a more aggressive lower rear bumper, front lip spoiler, a larger ducktail spoiler, and a pair of "air guides" at the lower edges of the front bumper.

Oddly, though, the Nismo misses out on the Z-style tail-lights that are available on regular Leaf variants. Six paint options are available, including two variations on Stealth Grey that's exclusive to the Nismo.

On the inside there's a splash of piano-black plastic, leather- and suede-like material on the dashboard, Nismo branding on the dash and seats, and a unique power switch. The steering wheel is trimmed in TailorFit faux leather, and features a red centre marker and red stitching. 

If the Leaf Nismo tickles your fancy, you're fresh out of luck, as Nissan Australia decided in March to delay the third-generation Leaf's local launch "indefinitely".
