Maserati has shown off some initial images and details of the new MC20 GT2 racer ahead of its official debut at the end of June at the 24 Hours of Spa in Belgium.

The Maserati MC20 GT2 marks a return to the FIA GT2 championship for the Italian automaker since the MC12 GT2 raced between 2004 and 2010.

Maserati has confirmed the MC20 GT2 will be powered by a version of the road-going model’s 3.0-litre Nettuno twin-turbo V6 engine.

Although power outputs weren’t detailed, the Italian carmaker says it will be taken “to a higher level”. The road-going model currently produces 463kW of power and 730Nm of torque.

This Nettuno twin-turbo V6 engine will be mated to a six-speed sequential racing transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

The MC20 GT2 has an ultra-light carbon-fibre central monocoque with lightweight, quick-release full composite bodywork for a “good weight-power ratio”.

The kerb weight wasn’t detailed but the road-going MC20 coupe weighs in at 1500kg.

Aerodynamic elements in the MC20 GT2 have been “exploited to the limit” with a front splitter and an adjustable rear wing.

All the suspension components are racing-oriented with adjustable shock absorbers and anti-roll bars.

On the inside there’s a single seat, as well as a 10.0-inch display integrated into the carbon-fibre dashboard.

The road-going Maserati MC20 was first revealed in September 2020, with the convertible version unveiled in May last year.

As previously detailed, Maserati has confirmed there’s going to be an all-electric version of the MC20 which will be revealed “in the future”.

Maserati has already pledged to go all-electric by 2030 and is going to have at least one pure electric variant of every model it offers by 2025.
