2027 GWM Haval H7: Boxy new mid-size SUV to start at under $50,000

The 2027 GWM Haval H7 will go on sale midway through October 2026, giving the Chinese brand another entry in the hotly competitive and high-volume mid-size SUV segment.

While GWM Australia hasn’t released full pricing, it says the boxy mid-size SUV – a completely different-looking SUV to the vehicle that debuted the Haval H7 nameplate here last year – will be priced from under $50,000 drive-away.

Final Australian pricing and specification will be announced in the coming weeks, with prospective buyers now being invited to put in expressions of interest on the GWM Australia website.

Unlike the existing Haval H6, or the completely different-looking Haval H7 it replaces, it’ll be offered exclusively with Hi4 all-wheel drive.

The new Haval H7 will be offered with a choice of hybrid or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains.

For context, the cheapest Haval H6 Hybrid is priced from $40,990 drive-away and the cheapest PHEV from $44,990 drive-away. All-wheel drive versions of each start at $47,490 and $50,990 drive-away, respectively.

GWM has previously confirmed the new Haval H7 will be launched initially in short-wheelbase, five-seat guise, with an extended-length, seven-seat variant due in 2027.

Both the hybrid and plug-in hybrid use a 110kW turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.

The hybrid has total system outputs of 182kW and 670Nm, giving it a claimed 0-100km/h time of 7.0 seconds. It uses a 1.53kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and has fuel consumption of 7.0L/100km.

The PHEV has a larger 33.7kWh ternary lithium battery, giving it 137km of electric range under the WLTC cycle. Total combined range is 844km.

It produces total system outputs of 320kW and 670Nm, and has a claimed 0-100km/h time of 4.9 seconds.

Braked towing capacity is 1500kg across the entire lineup. CarExpert understands there'll be four variants offered at first, with prices topping out at around $54,000 drive-away.

The standard-length Haval H7 measures 4800mm long, 1950mm wide and 1843mm tall on a 2738mm wheelbase.

The extended-length H7 uses a longer 2850mm wheelbase, which brings total length to 4912mm and makes it longer than a Kia Sorento (4815mm).

When it arrives here, it will finally give GWM a seven-seat option positioned below the large Tank 500, which starts at $65,990 drive-away.

While not intended to be as rugged as Tank-badged vehicles, the Haval H7 is offered in China with off-road gear like a crawl mode, a tank turn function, and what GWM calls an electronically locking mechanical dog-clutch rear differential.

It uses the same car-like unibody architecture, however, as GWM models like the Haval H6, and features MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension, in contrast with the more rugged body-on-frame underpinnings of Tank-badged vehicles.

GWM is filling out its mid-size SUV portfolio, with the Haval H6 and its coupe SUV Haval H6 GT sibling being joined by not only a new-generation Haval H7 but also the upcoming Haval Jolion Max.

“We see a real opportunity for the H7 in Australia. As well as being loaded with the latest technology, including Hi4, it broadens the appeal of the Haval range and gives customers another reason to consider GWM,” said Steve Maciver, head of marketing and communications for GWM Australia and New Zealand.

While it'll be new to Australia, the second-generation Haval H7 has been on sale in China as the Haval Menglong/Raptor since 2023.
