The facelifted Alfa Romeo Tonale has arrived in Australia, with freshened styling, a revised lineup, and a new special edition.

Exterior changes for the small Italian SUV include a revised grille and front bumper, a shorter front overhang, new 19-inch alloy wheels, and a wider track front and rear.

Inside, there's a redesigned centre console with a rotary gear selector, and new material finishes.

Alfa Romeo says it has refined the Tonale's mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains, with power delivery "more prompt, linear and continuous" and transitions between the internal combustion engine and electric motor "now virtually imperceptible".

The wider track is said to reduce body roll and understeer.

Peak power from the PHEV system is down from 208kW to 198kW, but electric range has changed from 61km under the more lenient NEDC cycle to 58km under the WLTP cycle.

Alfa Romeo Australia is now offering the Tonale in a single Veloce trim, with either mild-hybrid (Ibrida) or plug-in hybrid (Ibrida Plug-In) powertrains.

Features formerly reserved for the optional Lusso Pack are now standard across the range, including perforated black leather-accented seats with eight-way power adjustment, memory (driver only), heating and ventilation up front, plus a heated steering wheel and heated washer nozzles.

A special edition called the Sport Speciale is based on the Veloce Ibrida but adds 20-inch two-tone alloy wheels and a gloss-black body kit, plus unique ice grey accents inside and out, and revised ambient lighting.

It also features additional standard equipment like a Harman Kardon sound system and a sunroof, though it misses out on the ventilated front seats newly made standard on the Veloce.

The Sport Speciale is uniquely available with a special Giallo Ocra exterior paint finish, a bold yellow that can't be had on other Tonales. There are two new exterior finishes available across the range, however: Monza Green and Brera Red. All Tonales come with a black roof.
