The new Mercedes-AMG SL is set to launch in Australia in July and will only be offered exclusively in flagship AMG 63 guise. It’s available to order now.

The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 4Matic+ is priced from $374,900 before on-road costs, which is $1721 more than the previous-generation AMG SL 63 when it was last sold here in 2018.

Mercedes-Benz Australia has ruled out the less powerful SL 43 and SL 55, despite having previously confirmed both would launch in the second half of 2022.

The latest, seventh-generation model was revealed back in October 2021 and is the first SL to be developed exclusively as a Mercedes-AMG model.

For the first time in over 20 years, the SL comes with a fabric soft top instead of a metal hard top.

By doing this, Mercedes-AMG has shaved off 21kg. The roof can open or close in 15 seconds at speeds up to 60 km/h.

This SL brings back a 2+2 seating configuration that was last available as an option on the fourth-generation SL, too.

The back seats in the next-gen SL apparently provide enough space for passengers up to 1.5 metres tall, so best for small children or big bags.

Mercedes-AMG suggests the second row of seating can also be used to stow a golf bag, suggesting a certain core clientele.

This SL rides on a completely new aluminium composite spaceframe platform known as the Modular Sports Architecture (MSA) that’ll also underpin the next AMG GT coupe.

This MSA platform doesn’t share any components whatsoever with the previous SL and AMG GT roadsters.

This price is before on-road costs.

    Powertrain

The SL 63 4Matic+ is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with 430kW of power and 800Nm of torque.

This is mated to a nine-speed automatic with a wet multi-disc start-off clutch, with drive sent through a fully-variable 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system.

Merecedes-AMG claims the SL 63 4Matic+ can do the 0-100km/h sprint in 3.6 seconds, and flat out you’ll be doing 315km/h.

The SL 63 4Matic+ comes standard with the AMG Dynamics Plus package that adds dynamic engine mounts, a ‘Race’ driving program including ‘Drift’ mode, as well as an electronically locking rear differential.

    Efficiency

The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 4Matic+ is claimed to consume 13.9 litres per 100km on the combined WLTP cycle.

    Dimensions

    The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 4Matic+ measures in at 4705mm long, 1915mm wide, and 1353mm tall with a 2700mm wheelbase.

The SL 63 4Matic+ has 240 litres of boot capacity, which shrinks to 213 litres when the electric soft top is retracted.

    Servicing and Warranty

It’s expected the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 4Matic+ will be covered by a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty like the rest of the Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicle range.
