The seven-seat Jeep Grand Cherokee L has gained a fourth variant for 2023, slotting in below the Summit Reserve range-topper.

The familiar Overland trim has returned, on both the new, shorter five-seat body style and the longer L that arrived locally last year.

In the L, it’s priced at $103,250 before on-road costs, helping to fill the gulf between the Limited ($88,750 before on-roads) and Summit Reserve ($119,450 list). Prices for the carryover range are unchanged from last year.

The Overland features the Summit Reserve’s more sophisticated Quadra-Trac II four-wheel drive system with Quadra-Lift adaptive air suspension and hill descent control.

It also includes some of its luxury features like a hands-free power tailgate and a panoramic sunroof, but foregoes some of its more premium features like semi-automatic parking assist and 19-speaker McIntosh sound system.

20-inch alloy wheels are standard, with 18-inch alloys – the smallest on the L range – an option.

They come as part of an Off-Road Group option package, which also adds an electronic limited-slip differential, a 230mm rear axle, and skid plate shields for the front suspension, transfer case and fuel tank.

All models continue to use a naturally aspirated 3.6-litre petrol V6 engine. A turbocharged plug-in hybrid four-cylinder will join the Grand Cherokee line this year but only in the shorter two-row body, while there’s no diesel this generation and the petrol V8 isn’t being offered here.

Elsewhere in the range, the Limited has what Jeep calls TechnoLeather upholstery instead of Capri leather, while the Night Eagle has been upgraded to the same 10.1-inch touchscreen as the rest of the range, ditching its smaller 8.4-inch unit.
