The Hyundai Ioniq is a discontinued small electrified liftback that helped introduce many Australians to Hyundai's hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric technology. Before IONIQ became a dedicated EV sub-brand, this model gave the company a direct rival to efficient small cars and early mainstream electric options. Its strengths were modest running costs, a slippery shape, practical hatchback packaging and a calm driving character. The original Ioniq has since been succeeded in spirit by the more advanced IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6 and other Hyundai EVs. It remains important because it marked a turning point in Hyundai's move from conventional cars into serious electrified alternatives.
