A rare Holden Commodore SS HDT Group A first owned by Australian racing legend Peter Brock is heading to auction again, almost three years after it fetched more than $1 million after a bidding war.
Listed by Collecting Cars, this 1985 Holden Commodore VK started life as an SS but was soon sent to the Holden Dealer Team’s Port Melbourne workshop to have its Group A modifications made.
The 500 examples built allowed the Commodore to compete in the Australian Touring Car Championship – the forerunner to the V8 Supercars and now Supercars Championships – which was running to international Group A regulations at the time.
While the cap of 500 road cars makes this a rare beast as it is, this example is even more special because it was first owned by Peter Brock, the man who – at the time – had exclusively driven Holdens to his record-breaking eight wins at the Bathurst 500 and later 1000.
Mr Brock extended his tally to nine in 1987, though when this VK Commodore arrived in his driveway he had just won a third straight Bathurst 1000, having swept the Great Race from 1982 to 1984 with co-driver Larry Perkins.
Being delivered to Mr Brock meant that this could only have one chassis number: #005, referencing the #05 he had so famously been known to compete with.
As with all VK HDT Group As, this example is painted in Formula Blue – hence its Blue Meanie nickname – and has its iconic HDT logo headlights, Brock signature front quarter panels, commemorative Bathurst win sticker and racing-inspired aero wheels, front air dam and rear spoiler.
The car is powered by a 4.9-litre (or 304 cubic-inch) Holden V8 engine which produced a claimed 196kW when it was new, driving the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission.
This example has completed just under 80,000km, and it’s understood the only modification made is a stainless steel exhaust system.
It’s not the first time chassis #005 has appeared at auction, having sold for $1,057,509 plus fees in May 2021, when it was understood to have been sold to LMCT Plus.
The car was subsequently won in a raffle by the current owner. It was recently listed for auction but it’s not clear if the auction occurred.
Included in the sale is a folder containing documents certifying its heritage as a Brock-owned car, which includes verification from John Harvey, former HDT driver and 1983 Bathurst 1000 winner.
At the time of writing, bidding has reached $90,000. The auction is due to end at 4:30pm AEST on Thursday, April 11.
