MG is another Chinese brand keeping the wagon alive

Wagons may be an increasingly endangered automotive species, but MG will keep the flame burning a little longer with a wagon variant of its upcoming 07 electric sedan.

These patent images come from the company's filing with China's National Intellectual Property Administration, which were posted on social media site Weibo by SugarDesign.

The 07 wagon has a longer, flatter roofline, which not only results in more cargo-carrying capacity, but means there should be more headroom for rear seat passengers too.

There's a more upright tailgate featuring a windscreen with a tiny wiper, all of which is underscored by a thin full-width LED tail-light strip. Compared to the sedan, the wagon's rear bumper has a bit more scalloping and detail.

From the B-pillar forward the wagon and sedan have identical body panels. Both models seem to be heavily inspired by the Porsche Taycan, although not quite as overtly as another vehicle from SAIC Motor, the SAIC Z7.

Both the 07 sedan and wagon are based on a new 800V architecture that supports both pure electric and plug-in hybrid drivetrains. According to Car News China the 07 EV sedan has a 176kW motor driving the rear wheels, and a 67kWh battery pack for a range of up to 650km under the very generous CLTC standard.

The 07 plug-in hybrid has an 82kW 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine up front, a 152kW electric motor, and a 30kWh battery pack for an EV range of 185km.

Although the wagon's patent images don't include a LiDAR module on the roof, it's safe to assume it will follow the sedan in offering it as part of an advanced driver assistance system package.

It's unclear if MG will offer the 07 sedan or wagon Down Under.

The company's sole electric sedan offering in Australia is the IM5, which starts at $60,990 for the base 217kW Premium model and stretches to $77,990 for the 572kW Performance variant. This vehicle is sold under SAIC Motor's premium IM Motors brand in China.

While wagons aren't anywhere near as popular as sedans or SUVs in China, there's been a surge of new long-roof entrants there.

Zeekr launched its 007 GT and BYD its Seal 06 Touring, both of which have been confirmed for Australian launches. Nio beat them to the punch with its ET5 Touring.

Other brands that have recently revealed or launched new wagons in China include Aistaland, Avatr, Fangchengbao and Stelato.
