Hyundai has confirmed it will produce an Ioniq 5 eN1 Cup Car in time for the 2024 Korean race season.
It was announced at the Hyundai N Festival and posted on social media by Car Scene Korea. The vehicle will debut in February 2024, before making its way onto the race track as part of a one-make racing championship in May 2024.
The race car will reportedly see a 200-250kg weight reduction compared to the regular Ioniq 5 N, but is expected to still weigh over two tonnes.
While Hyundai has yet to detail the vehicle in full, we know some weight has been dropped by switching to side and rear polycarbonate windows.
The vehicle features an FIA-compliant six-point roll cage. It’s unclear if the rear seats have been removed.
The electric car will run on 18-inch wheels and 280/680 R18 slick tyres, with six-piston front and four-piston rear brake calipers with racing brake pads.
It will also have an air jack lift to keep pit times quick.
During a race, the vehicle has high-voltage disconnectors to give the driver warning signals when the battery overheats.
The battery reportedly will also feature additional protection to keep it safe on the track.
The vehicle has a unique body kit with a lowered front bumper, large square air intakes and a rectangular front grille.
Changes include updated rear fenders, a larger rear spoiler and aggressive new details on the front bumper and bonnet.
The race model also sees the removal of the Ioniq 5 N road car’s air intakes on either side of the tailgate, while the rear bumper has been restyled.
The Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup car has adjustable suspension components to improve drivability, and Hyundai has dropped the height of the racer by 50mm-70mm compared with the road car.
It will have a specially tuned N Active Sound for each race team which will reportedly offer “boosted sound”.
Like the road car, it features N e-shift which simulates the feeling of an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Hyundai is yet to confirm if the Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup car will feature any differences in power outputs, but drivers will reportedly be allowed to use the N Grin Boost overboost function when overtaking.
The road car currently offers 478kW of power and 740Nm of torque from its dual electric motors, with drive sent to all four wheels.
It’s capable of completing the 0-100km/h sprint in 3.4 seconds.
