Just days after Aussie journos were allowed to sample the BYD Atto 2 small electric SUV ahead of its local launch next month, a new plug-in hybrid variant has been revealed in Europe.

BYD is being coy with details about the Atto 2 DM-i’s drivetrain, revealing only that there will be two options, each with a different battery pack, total power output, and range estimates.

The company claims one variant will have a combined hybrid and EV range of 1020km, as well as an electric-only range of 90km.

There will be some subtle visual differentiation between the electric and plug-in hybrid Atto 2 models. DM-i variants will have a slightly different badging and a tweaked design for the lower air intake, with a larger open area to draw more air into the engine bay.

The Midnight Blue paint seen above is exclusive to DM-i models.

Full details about the Atto 2 DM-i are expected to released when it is launched in Europe in November, with pre-sales to begin not long afterwards.

BYD says the first cars will arrive in showrooms and driveways across the Continent during the first quarter of 2026. It’s unknown if BYD intends the launch add plug-in hybrid drivetrain options to the Australian Atto 2 range.

With the EU imposing tariffs on made-in-China EVs, Chinese automakers have pivoted their European sales strategy towards plug-in hybrids.

CarExpert got to sample the Atto 2 EV earlier this week at its Australian debut, ahead of the car’s full launch in November.

Measuring 4310mm long, the Atto 2 will be sold Down Under with just one drivetrain featuring a 130kW/290Nm motor driving the front wheels. Fed by a 51.3kWh LFP battery capable of DC fast-charging up to 82kW, the Atto 2 has an estimated (WLTP) range of 345km.

Full specs and pricing for the Atto 2 EV have yet to be revealed, but we expect the base variant to have a low- to mid-$30,000 sticker price, with the high-spec Premium variant sailing closer to $40,000.
