Alpina has revealed its fettled BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe variant, and Australian pricing has been announced.

The 2022 BMW Alpina B4 Gran Coupe is best thought of as the closest thing to a Gran Coupe version of the M4, something BMW has said it doesn’t plan on building.

It’s listed on Alpina Australia’s website at $161,900 before on-road costs, which is $46,000 more than the flagship BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupe.

UPDATE, 04/04/2022: An Alpina Australia spokesperson has confirmed the B4 Gran Coupe will be coming Down Under. They expect the first cars to arrive towards the end of 2022.

The B4 Gran Coupe is powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six-cylinder petrol engine called S58, tuned to produce 364kW of power and 730Nm of torque.

This is 11kW less but 80Nm more than the S58 engine used in the BMW M3 and M4 Competition models.

Drive is sent through an eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission to BMW’s xDrive rear-biased all-wheel drive system.

BMW Alpina claims the B4 Gran Coupe can do the 0-100km/h sprint in 3.7 seconds, which is 0.2 seconds faster than the M3 and M4 Competition claimed 0-100km/h time.

In addition to the unique engine tune, there’s an Alpina exhaust system and an Alpina-tuned suspension, and drivers can choose between Comfort+, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Adaptive drive modes.

BMW recently announced it has secured the rights to the Alpina brand, which it says will secure the long-term future of the tuning firm as part of the BMW Group.

Although Alpina builds on the base laid down by BMW, the tuning firm does more than just tune its cars. BMW Alpina vehicles have their own VIN, and Alpina is recognised as a manufacturer in Germany.

BMW hasn’t given concrete details as to what Alpina will look like beyond 2025 when it discontinues its current vehicle program.

The Alpina team will continue to develop, manufacture and sell BMW Alpina vehicles until the end of 2025, with final assembly continuing to take place at the firm’s workshops in Buchloe.
