    There’s a range of 110TSI hatch and wagon models, atop which sit the GTI hot hatch and the all-wheel drive R hatchback and wagon.

    The range opens at $25,790 before on-road costs for the 110TSI Trendline hatchback and tops out at $57,990 before on-roads for the R wagon.

    Engines

    The 2020 Volkswagen Golf 110TSI is powered by a turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine producing 110kW of power and 250Nm of torque. It’s mated to a either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

    The 2020 Volkswagen Golf GTI and R use a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine which produces 180kW of power and 370Nm of torque in the GTI and 213kW of power and 380Nm of torque in the R. The limited edition GTI TCR produces 213kW of power and 350Nm of torque.

    The GTI and R use a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission while the GTI TCR uses a six-speed dual-clutch auto.

    All Golfs are front-wheel drive except for the all-wheel drive R.

    Claimed 0-100km/h times are 8.2 seconds for the 110TSI hatch, 8.6 seconds for the 110TSI wagon, 6.2 seconds for the GTI, 5.6 seconds for the GTI TCR, 4.8 seconds for the R hatch and 5.0 seconds for the R wagon.

    Fuel Economy

    The 2020 Volkswagen Golf 110TSI consumes 5.7L/100km on the combined cycle with the manual, 5.4L/100km with the auto and 5.6L/100km in the wagon.

    The GTI consumes 6.5L/100km, the GTI TCR 7.5L/100km, the R hatch 7.2L/100km and the R wagon 7.3L/100km.

    All models require 95RON premium unleaded fuel except for the GTI TCR and R, for which 98RON is advised. A 50L fuel tank is fitted across the range except in the R, which has a 55L tank.

    Dimensions

    The 2020 Volkswagen Golf hatchback measures 4258mm long and 1452mm tall in 110TSI models, 4268mm long and 1442mm tall in the GTI and 4263mm long and 1436mm tall in the R. The GTI TCR is 5mm lower than the GTI.

    The 110TSI wagon is 4567mm long and 1461mm tall and the R wagon 4580mm long and 1447mm tall.

    All Golf models are 1799mm wide.

    Luggage space is 380L in all hatches bar the R, expanding to 1270L with the rear seat folded. It’s reduced slightly in the R to 343L and 1233L, respectively.

    All wagons have 605L of luggage space, expanding to 1620L.

    Servicing

    Servicing is required every 12 months or 15,000km while all Golf models are covered by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

    Volkswagen offers three- and five-year servicing plans. The shorter plan costs $1100 in 110TSI models and $1350 in the rest, while the five-year plan costs $1900 and $2300, respectively.

    If you don’t want to purchase a plan, Volkswagen offers five years of capped-price servicing.

    Safety

    The Volkswagen Golf has a five-star rating from ANCAP, based on testing conducted in 2013. It received a frontal offset score of 15.92 out of 16, a side impact score of 16 out of 16, and whiplash and pedestrian protection scores of Good and Acceptable, respectively. Its total score was 35.92 out of 37.

    All 2020 Volkswagen Golf models come standard with autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, driver attention monitoring, and front, front-side and curtain airbags plus a driver’s knee airbag.

    Safety features available as options or standard in higher-spec models include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist and rear cross-traffic alert.
