The Alpine A290 is the brand's electric hot hatch, based on the Renault 5 E-Tech but given sharper styling, sportier chassis tuning and a more performance-focused character. It is not currently on sale as a new car in Australia, although Alpine's planned return to the local market gives the A290 clear relevance for future range planning. Overseas versions use a front-mounted electric motor with outputs up to 162kW, placing the A290 in a rare group of compact electric performance cars. Its strengths are its retro-inspired design, compact size and playful intent, while its limitations are tied to cabin space and the still-developing appetite for small premium EV hot hatches. It gives Alpine a credible electric successor to its lightweight performance heritage.
