The next-generation BMW 2 Series coupe has been spotted undergoing testing in Mexico, where it will produced alongside the 3 Series.

This prototype is clad from head to tail in camouflage, and is fitted some false body panels underneath.

The wide grille opening, the headlights and tail-lights, and the shape of the boot lid lend some credence to the alleged leak from April this year.

Like the upcoming 2 Series Active Tourer and other recent BMW prototypes, the new 2 Series coupe is fitted with lift up door handles.

While the latest 1 Series hatch and 2 Series Gran Coupe use a front- and all-wheel drive platform shared with Mini, the new 2 Series coupe is thought to be based on a cut-down version of the rear-wheel drive CLAR architecture used by the larger 3 Series.

This will likely mean there’s a follow up to the current M2, which is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine with 272kW and 465Nm.

A twin-turbo version of the six-pot with 331kW and 550Nm is used in the M2 CS.

By way of comparison, the current range-topping M135i xDrive hatch and M235i xDrive Gran Coupe models are equipped with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo making 225kW and 450Nm.
